Lady RedHawks Open Against the McKendree University Bearcats

Miami Women's Hockey opens its defense of the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championship this weekend against the McKendree University Bearcats at the Goggin Ice Center.  Game one is 7:10PM on Friday (9/30) with the finale of the two game set at 4PM on Saturday (10/1).   The Bearcats are expected to be a strong first weekend challenge for Miami.

The Lady RedHawks sport a solid returning group with 15 players from last year's national championship team back in Oxford for this season.   Miami adds three rookies to the roster: goaltender Rachel Damrath, defense Sarah Peterson, and forward Amanda Pugliese.  We will provide more detailed player profiles for the newcomers and veterans in coming newsletters.

Augustine, Booth, Mooney, and Smith Named Captains

Seniors Katie Augustine, Rachel Booth, Kaley Mooney, and Izzy Smith were named captains for the 2016/2017 season.  Mooney and Smith will wear the "C" and Augustine and Booth will sport the "A" for the Lady RedHawks.  Congrats to Augie, Boothie, Kaley, and Izzy.

Wendy Augustine

As most of you know, Miami Women's Hockey suffered a devastating loss this summer when Wendy Augustine, Mom of Katie Augustine, passed away in May in an accident on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky.  Wendy was our biggest fan, a vocal fixture at our games, home and away, and a support person for many of our players.  Because the Augustine family lives close by (West Chester), Wendy had become the unofficial Team Mom for our players.

On September 16, in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and the women's hockey team players and coaches, a red maple was planted between Goggin and the South Garage (toward the north end of the garage).  The tree will keep Wendy's memory alive near a place she loved dearly.  A plaque memorializing Wendy will identify the tree.  We urge everyone to stop by "Wendy's Tree" and reflect.  At the ceremony, the women's team presented John, Andrew, and Katie Augustine with a Miami Women's Hockey jersey with "Wendy" and the number "1" on the back.  She was indeed our #1 fan.  Wendy, you will be dearly missed by all of us.

  • Lady RedHawks Sweep Grand Valley State

In a rematch of last year's national championship game, Miami Women's Hockey swept Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan by scores of 3-1 and 9-3.  The two road wins raised the RedHawks record to 6-0 in the early going of the 2016-2017 campaign.

In the opening game, a sluggish performance by Miami allowed Grand Valley to pull within a goal at 2-1 late in the third period, but the RedHawks countered quickly and settled for the 3-1 victory.

The second game was a different story as the Lady 'Hawks, led by a Katie Augustine's six point performance, blasted the Lakers 9-3 in Miami's best performance of the year.  Augustine's efforts included a natural hat trick in the first 13 minutes of the game.  Miami led 5-2 after two, but exploded for four more goals in the third period and cruised to the 9-3 final tally.  Augustine finished with four goals and two assists.  Kaley Mooney chipped in with one goal and three assists.

    Miami Hosts Robert Morris

This weekend the Miami women battle Robert Morris University at home.  Game times are 7PM Friday and 7PM Saturday.  Both games are at the Goggin Ice Center.

Saturday night is Miami Women's Hockey Breast Cancer Awareness Game.  The team will wear special jerseys for the game (you can guess one color that will be included:). The stylish jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, so if you are interested in bidding on a jersey(s), please email Katy Baldwin at baldwike@miamioh.edu    Bidding will stay open until all the jerseys have bids and are sold.  Katy and her Mom have put together this great event that we hope will become an annual tradition.  If you don't have any particular player you wish to bid on, just let Katy know and she will find someone for you.  Bids start at $40.  All proceeds go to Miami Women's D1 Hockey and a breast cancer charity.

Come to the Goggin this weekend and support the Lady RedHawks.

    Rookie Profile: Sarah Peterson

Sarah "Petey" Peterson hails from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  Sarah played for Little Caesar's AAA 19U before coming to Miami.  Sarah's parents are Amy and Garth Peterson, and she has one brother, Grant, who also attends Miami.  After playing forward for Little Caesar's, Sarah has moved to defense for Miami and made her first collegiate goal a big one when she had the game-tying goal against Lindenwood in a game Miami went on to win.  When she headed off to college, Sarah's parents decided to replace her with a puppy - the puppy made sure the nest is not empty.  Welcome to the Miami family to the Petersons.

See you at the Goggin this weekend.

  • How about some positive news for Miami sports!

Below is a video clip of Miami's #10, forward Rachel Booth, and her participation in the World University Games in Kazakhstan.  USA won the bronze medal by beating China 3-0.  Canada played Russia for the gold.  Four Miami women hockey players and Coach Hicks there representing Miami and the USA.  "Hicksy" is an assistant for Team USA.

Great job by all the team members for being selected and for "Hicksy" for being on staff!

Is there any chance Miami can get the team to move to varsity scholarship level?

Money and resources aren't there. This team is about the women and the coaches who give a lot of themselves to make all this happen on a yearly basis. When playoff time comes around, and they need some funding to help defray costs, that's the best time to help.

Actually, ANYTIME, financially, is a great time to contribute to the women's hockey team!
  • Two additional notes:

In the Ohio State series, due to players at the World University Games, plus injuries, sickness, etc. Miami swept OSU with just 8 skaters and their back-up goalie. Great job by assistant Kaitlyn Johnson pulling it all together.

Also, this year the national championships for all 5 divisions of the ACHA will be in Columbus. The D-1 women begin pool play on March 15, so hopefully this year's team will again make it to nationals. I believe in the last rankings they were at #4 in the country.

Here's the link in reference to your post about Columbus.

  • Just to remind everyone that this weekend will be the final home games for the season. Michigan comes to town and both Friday and Saturday games will immediately follow the men in the main arena. Saturday is senior night, and it will be a late one since the men's game doesn't start until 8:00. But, it will be well worth it for those that are there with six seniors being honored. These are also very important games for that final push towards making the national tournament.

Hope to see a lot of you there.
