  • RedHawks Sweep Aquinas College

Game Recaps.  For the second week in a row the Lady RedHawks had little trouble finding the net as Miami swept the Aquinas College Saints on Friday, October 5 and Saturday October 6 at The Edge Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan in two CCWHA league contests.  Final scores were 5-0 Friday and 10-1 in the getaway game on Saturday.  On Friday the RedHawks were buzzing piling up shot after shot, but the Aquinas goalie proved difficult to solve and it was just 2-0 after one period.  Sophomore Emily Sloan notched both first period goals off assists from Darby Edmondson and Amanda Pugliese.  Freshmen Izzy Aerni and Maizy Crandal stretched the lead to 4-0 after two periods with assists going to sophomores Christy von Aulock and Kendall Mason.  Junior Jenn Davis got the final goal unassisted as the Lady RedHawks cruised to the 5-0 win.  Sophomore Erin Sparks recorded the shutout in goal for Miami as she turned aside all 13 Saints' shots.

Saturday was more of the same as the RedHawks were led by sophomore Katie Sciales' hat trick.  Sciales' third goal on the power-play was a thing of beauty, a one-time laser from the wing off a perfect cross-ice feed through the box by Nat Hornbuckle. Hornbuckle also logged a goal of her own earlier in the period.  Other RedHawks getting on the score sheet were Amanda Pugliese with a goal and two assists, Christy von Aulock with two assists, Emily Sloan with two goals and one assist, Izzy Aerni with two assists, Jenn Davis, Angela Bucci, and Sara Gargasz with one goal each, and Sarah Peterson, Fiona Curran, and Kendall Mason with one assist each.  Rachel Damrath and Ripley Crosley shared the netminding duties in the Saturday game.

    RedHawks Sweep Michigan, 3-0, 2-1

Game Recaps.  The Lady RedHawks continued their winning ways by downing the University of Michigan Wolverines last Friday night and Saturday evening at the Goggin Ice Center.  Miami used a stingy defense and just enough offense to hold off Michigan.  On Friday night, the powerplay got the RedHawks going in the first period when Amanda Pugliese took a beautiful backdoor pass and buried the biscuit from a bad angle.  Christy von Aulock and Maizy Crandall picked up assists for the RedHawks.  Midway through the second period, Izzy Aerni gave Miami some breathing room on a wrap-around with Bella Pignatiello and Christy von Aulock assisting.  Four minutes later Sara Gargasz put the game away with Angela Bucci and Audie Vanroboys getting the helpers for the RedHawks.  Erin Sparks logged the shutout in goal for Miami as she turned aside all 16 of the Wolverine shots.  Miami out-shot Michigan 46-16.

Saturday night was a more tense affair as the first period ended scoreless with both goaltenders making difficult saves.  Miami got on the board first in the second period when Sara Gargasz took a pass from Kelly Cingel, kept her feet moving on a rush, and ripped a forehand through a partial screen just inside the left goalpost.  Just 29 seconds into the third period Bella Pignatiello found the puck in the crease and poked in the rebound of a Jenn Davis shot to give Miami a 2-0 lead. Izzy Aerni also assisted on what turned out to be the game-winner.  Miami then held on as Michigan scored with 2:56 to play off a blast from the point. Erin Sparks again faced 16 shots and turned aside 15 to anchor the RedHawks in net.

    Rookie Profile: Kelly Cingel

Next up for introduction to our "Friends" is first year student Kelly Cingel.  Kelly is a biology major from Cleveland, Ohio..  Kelly previously played for Gilmour Academy where she used her excellent skating to stand out as a puck-moving defenseman.  Her parents are Dave and Karen Cingel and she has a brother, David, and a sister, Alexa.  When asked for something interesting about her, Kelly said she "...met Sidney Crosby at Target" - it doesn't get much more interesting than that!  We welcome Kelly, Dave, Karen, David, and Alexa to the Miami Women's Hockey  family.

  • #5 RedHawks Sweep Bearcats, 2-1, 5-2

The Miami Lady RedHawks swept the McKendree University Bearcats last Friday night and Saturday afternoon at the Goggin Ice Center.  The sweep raised Miami's record to 13-6-3 and moved the RedHawks into the #5 spot in the national rankings.

On Friday night, Christy von Aulock staked Miami to a 1-0 lead late in the first period with an unassisted goal.  That lead stood up until the Bearcats tied the score about five minutes into the third stanza.  With 8:19 left in the game, Sara Gargasz won a faceoff to Angela Bucci, Bucci then moved to a severe angle and wristed a game-winning snipe top-shelf to the short side.  Miami out-shot McKendree 31-14 with freshman goaltender Ripley Crosley stopping 13 of the 14 shots she faced.

Saturday the RedHawks built a 3-0 first period lead, weathered a second period comeback by the Bearcats that closed the gap to 3-2, and then won going away with two third period goals for a 5-2 victory.  Miami again out-shot the Bearcats, this time by a 32-26 margin.  Sophomore goaltender Erin Sparks turned aside 24 of the 26 shots she faced.  Miami used first period goals from Maizy Crandall, Sara Gargasz, and Darby Edmondson, all from net-front battles, to build the 3-0 lead.  Amanda Pugliese, Angela Bucci, Emily Sloan and Crandall picked up assists on the tallies.  The RedHawks put the game away with two goals in a 30 second span seven minutes into the third period.  Sara Gargasz notched a delayed penalty goal and then a power-play rebound goal from Amanda Pugliese finished the scoring.  Bucci, von Aulock, and Crandall picked up assists on the Gargasz and Pugliese goals.

Senior Night and Alumnae Weekend This Friday and Saturday

Senior Night.  It will be an emotional weekend at the Goggin Ice Center when Miami Women's Hockey hosts the Midland University Warriors with puck drops at 9:35PM Friday and 8:00PM Saturday.  Warm-up starts 30 minutes before puck-drop. The Saturday game will mark the last home game for seniors Michaela Goguen, Nat Hornbuckle, and Tori Wolter.  We will have a ceremony to honor our seniors before the puck-drop and after the warm-up, about 7:40PM Saturday.

Senior Night is always packed with feeling and nostalgia as our seniors play their last game at the Goggin.  Michaela, Nat, and Tori have represented Miami University and Miami Women's Hockey in the best possible way.  They have won multiple national and league championships, been leaders on and off the ice, been great teammates, and solid performers in the classroom.  Please come to the Goggin Saturday evening to recognize these outstanding young women.

Alumnae Weekend.  In addition to Senior Night, Miami Women's Hockey alumnae will return to Oxford from as far away as Arizona, New York, and Ontario.  Our alums will be on the ice at 2PM Saturday and will then go to the club lounge about 3PM to reminisce with old teammates, coaches, parents, and friends.  It also will be great to have our alumnae in Oxford for senior night.  Many were teammates of our three graduating seniors and the alums are looking forward to seeing everyone again.  Love and Honor - Go RedHawks.

Please come to the Goggin Saturday, 7:40PM, as we honor our three seniors

    Here's the "official press release"

Crosley Leads Way As Miami Sweeps Michigan State, Advances To Final Four

There was good news and bad news for the Lady RedHawks in their Division 1 ACHA National Championship Tournament series against the Michigan State Spartans.  The bad news is that #5 seed Miami scored only two goals in the two games.  The good news is that is all they needed to sweep the #4 seed Spartans, 1-0, 1-0.  Freshman goaltender Ripley Crosley was outstanding in net turning aside all 52 Michigan State shots in the two games.

Both game-winning goals came late in the second period.  On Wednesday, Darby Edmondson batted in the rebound of a Sara Gargasz shot with less than a minute to go in the second stanza.  On Thursday, Gargasz rifled a partly screened shot that handcuffed the Spartans' netminder and careened off her blocker and into the net.  In both games, Michigan State had their chances to tie in the third period, but Miami's defense and forwards blocked numerous shots and when they didn't, Crosley was there to stone the Spartans.  In the series-deciding game, Crosley stopped two Spartan breakaways and made a game-saving save sliding from left to right with two seconds left to foil a point-blank shot.  That one last save sent the RedHawks to the national semi-finals.

The Miami sweep marked the sixth year in a row the Lady RedHawks have advanced to the final four.  Miami has captured three ACHA D1 national championship in the last five years.
