Toledo women at Miami tonight at 7 in Millett

DICKDICK Wealthy Alum
This game is on ESPN3 with Steve Baker and Carol Smith, or you can listen to Tim Bray.  Personally, I am not making the drive from New Bremen tonight as we are expecting 1-3 inches of snow turning into freezing rain with heavy icing tonight.  Toledo is 10-9 (5-3) while Miami is 10-11 (3-6). This is our 3rd game in 5 days and we won the first two, at BG and home vs Western Michigan.

Last year Miami swept Toledo beating them home, away, and in Cleveland in the MAC quarterfinals.  That gives us 4 in a row vs Toledo, all under Coach Duffy.  Before that longtime Coach Cullop had never lost to Miami.  Toledo is always tough defensively and on the boards.  They have only one double digit scorer in 5-10 Jr  Nakiah Black at 12 ppg, but have a whole bunch of girls averaging between 9 and 5.  5-8 SR guard Mariella Santucci (Italy) is a 4 year starter, and Toledo won the MAC Tournament when she was a Freshman.  Size comes from 6-2 SR Arianne Whitaker (Auburn transfer), 6-1 JR Tanaya Beacham, and 6-0 SR Sara Rokkanen ( Finland).

Tonight is Girls and Women in Sports night and also Myaamia Heritage night.

It was 19-4 Miami with 2 minutes to go and Coach took all 4 of our top scorers out.  Toledo went on a quick 8-0 run.  19-12 Miami at the end of 1.

Same story as before. Take out Hoff, Sav, Lauren, Peyton and a 19-4 lead shrinks quickly to 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. Need to get our starters back in but bench has to contribute something. I think I would put Kelly M. in over Freeman at this point when spelling Sav.

Esbrand out of control last couple of possessions as well.

At the 5 and under TO we are up 33-23.  At one point UT cut it to 4, then we got hot again.  We are shooting 62%.  Dickerson 13, Scott 10, Hoff 6, Kluesner 4 accounts for all 33 points.

Besides the obvious change in coaching, the biggest difference in this year's team compared to last years, is last year Duffy could go to her bench and not see a real dropoff. This year, we go to the bench and their unfortunately is a big dropoff. Bench needs to step up.

45-29 Miami at the half. Played the starters the entire second quarter except Esbrand for Schmitz the last 2 minutes. Dickerson with 15, Peyton with 12, Hoff and Sav with 9 each.

We have been on fire except for the last 2 minutes of the first quarter with our 4 best out.  45-29 Miami at the half.  We are shooting 61% from the floor, 40% on threes, and 100% on free throws.  Lauren Dickerson with 15, Peyton Scott 12, Abbey Hoff 9 (all3's) and Savannah Kluesner 9.  We were outrebounded 15-10 ( not very many missed shots).  Toledo has 13 TO's, we only have 5.  Scott has 3 steals, Kluesner and Hoff 2 each.  Kluesner with 3 rebounds.

A caution, once again our top 4 played huge minutes.  Monday we had a 15 point lead with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter and we were behind with 7 minutes to go.  We may wear down in our 3rd game in 5 days.

Also, it is a good thing I did not go tonight as I can hear the ice hitting the windows.

57-33 Miami as we continue to hit everything.  TO Toledo 6:30 to go in the third.

    Lauren Dickerson shoots too much.

A quick 7 points by UT out of the TO and we call TO with 5:30 to go, up 18.

Coach is going to have to be very judicious with her substitutions. She can’t afford to rest the starters for long.

92-83 Miami win!! Peyton with 28, Lauren 23, Sav 21, Hoff 14. Great balanced scoring. 3 straight wins!! Next up MAC's best team, CMU on Saturday. Miami now 11-11 overall and 4-6 in MAC play. Great game ladies!!

Miami 22/23 from the FT line!! 95%!!! That is how you seal a game!!

We won. the lead got down to 7, but Sav hit 4 straight free throws and we held on to win 92-83.  Mariella Santucci was terrific for Toledo and ended up with 31 points.  Our free throw shooting was tremendous, Lauren missed one in the last minute or we would have been perfect.  22 out of 23 for 95.7% ( after watching the men miss free throw after free throw last night).  52% from the field, 95% from the line, and 47% on threes.

Peyton Scott had a career high 28 points, Lauren Dickerson with 23 and Savannah Kluesner with 22, Abby Hoff with 14.

That is 3 wins in 5 days and Central Michigan comes in on Saturday.  They are undefeated in the MAC and had an RPI of 18 coming into tonight's games.  As good as all that sounds, Central has had a bunch of close games and has come from behind late 3 or 4 times and won a couple in OT, so beating them is not out of the question.  BIG game on Saturday.  All of  a sudden the starting lineup has come together and we look good!  Bench has to be better though.

I am a huge fan of Dickerson. What a great playmaker she is. Our number 23 is a great defender. Our bench scored only 3 pts, but our starters didn't seem too tired. I am hooked on this team. Highly entertaining

    Yea us!

Toledo should change their name to the bombers because some of their shots were a good 3 feet past the extended 3-point line.
  • DICKDICK Wealthy Alum
I am guessing that this was the first time in Miami history that we had 3 girls score 20 points in the same game.

One stat perhaps not mentioned is Toledo was only giving up 65 points a game and we scored 92! That is execution and ball movement.
